MOTION GRAPHICS, EDITOR

Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF) is the only film festival to provide a space for pan-Asian American voices, perspectives, and histories told through multimedia arts in Seattle. Our volunteer-run organization empowers and uplifts Asian American creatives and builds community connections through our annual festival and other year-round events. We aim to be a platform that broadens the understanding of our community’s stories through elevating independent films that reflect the diversity and richness of Asian Americana and Asian diasporas.

OKAERI (WELCOME HOME): THE NISEI LEGACY AT SHOFUSO

ORAL HISTORY VIDEOGRAPHER

Okaeri (Welcome Home): The Nisei Legacy at Shofuso explores the unique connection and contributions that Philadelphia’s second-generation Japanese American, or Nisei, community has given to Shofuso. Despite being birthright citizens, the American government incarcerated the Nisei as “enemy aliens” during WWII, alongside their immigrant parents. After the war, Philadelphia’s Nisei formed the Friends of the Japanese House and Garden (FJHG), which oversaw the restoration and maintenance of Shofuso as part of a broader movement of Japanese American cultural reclamation in the late 20th century.

For over 45 years, Asian CineVision (ACV) has provided a platform for Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the media arts. ACV creates a community of artists and storytellers. ACV’s marquee program, the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) has the primary goal to exhibit the most current achievements in Asian and Asian American independent media-making to broad audiences—some 100 short and feature films each year. AAIFF seeks to create an environment where artists, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts can meet and explore how to push creative bounds. Finally, AAIFF presents works by media makers from various ethnic backgrounds in order to promote an understanding that there is multiplicity in Asian and Asian American experiences.

It shares an intimate, uplifting glimpse into the life of Setsuko Thurlow, an 85-year-old survivor of the atomic bombing who dedicated her life to peace and the elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
