Brett Kodama is an award-winning Nikkei filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY, boasting over ten years of working experience in film and video production. He has worked across numerous genres and productions, from documentary and interview-focused pieces, to narrative, commercial, music videos, and producing live and streamed events. His skill set is just as diverse, boasting credits as a Director of Photography, video editor, motion graphic designer, colorist, and more.

His work has been showcased across the country and abroad, receiving numerous awards, including one presented at the White House through the March on Washington Film Festival. His work has also been featured in an educational capacity, being shown in schools, as well as being used a resource on websites such as Densho, an important educational resource on the incarceration of Japanese Americans by the United States government during the Second World War. He also worked with WNET’s ALL-ARTS as a Multimedia Associate Producer, editing and captioning videos for their social media platforms, including videos for their Webby-nominated series “Generational Anxiety”.

In addition, Brett has collaborated with various nonprofit organizations, including Asian CineVision, the Seattle Asian American Film Festival, the Japanese American Citizens League, and the educational organization, Facing History & Ourselves. This work has allowed him to advocate and support his community, as well as utilize his skills and experience to benefit causes important to him. Notably, Brett co-directed the community-focused film Paper Chase, a feature documentary that explores the history of Japanese immigration to North America through the lens of community newspapers, such as the historic Rafu Shimpo.
